Karen Van Tuyl

Karen has over 30 years of education and experience in the health and fitness industry.

Her career began 1982 as a powerlifter and body builder competing successfully at the state, national, and international level. While competing she spent her time educating herself in all aspects of  health, fitness, and performance nutrition. Supporting herself, she worked in numerous fitness facilities learning about the industry and personal training. 

In 1988 she opened her first gym where she manage her facility, personal training business, and continued to compete in Bodybuilding competitions. The years that followed she became a mom, giving birth to 2 beautiful, healthy babies. Eventually closing her gym, she hung up her competition bikini, and continued her education and research in therapeutic body work, numerous massage modalities, and health education. She had an affinity for adrenaline sports consequently resulting in multiple pelvic impact injuries, and a shattered calcaneus (heel fracture.) These injuries drastically changed her life. She suffered daily from chronic musculoskeletal pain, and was unable to find lasting relief from the knowledge she possessed. Her quest for pain relief led her to Pilates. After working privately for 6 months with a Pilates instructor trained in post rehabilitation, her hips and body started to untwist, and her pain became manageable. She was hooked, and went on to study and receive her comprehensive Pilates certification.

In her early 40's her health started to suffer dramatically with, digestive, hormonal, joint pain and inflammation issues. The Doctors had no concrete answers to her suffering. The responses she received were;  "it was part of aging," or "it was all in her head." They offered a plethora of medications and a Psychotherapy referral. Her ongoing health issues ultimately resulted in the loss her entire large colon, (A Total Colectomy.) After the surgery she continued to suffer with debilitating symptoms. Finally with the prompting of her Chiropractor she got tested for autoimmune disease, and was diagnosed with Hashimotos Disease (an autoimmune disease causing chronic inflammation and consequential failure of the thyroid gland.) Again, the doctors and nutritionist had no answers and could only offer medications. She decided to take her health into her own hands and began her ongoing research and education into diet and nutrition for autoimmune disease. After a few years of  "trial and error" eliminating and reintroducing problematic foods, she discovered that a AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) Paleo diet worked the best. Success! Her Autoimmune disease went into remission and All her symptoms disappeared. Today she is grateful, healthy, vibrant and passionate about helping others achieve their goals in health.

Her current area of study: Z- Health performance solutions. The next evolution of education for Heath and Fitness professional, backed by Neuroscience. A brain based approach to health and human performance. 

Karen's studio offers a private boutique style studio environment, working with individuals. Utilizing a fusion of Pilates, yoga, functional training, muscle release work, nutrition, and mindfulness meditation techniques for a “whole body” approach to health and fitness.
